Can writing children’s books be a business?

business books
Duffy asked:

I want to write children stories when I grow up but I am 15 and I am a young writer… My thing is that other kids who want to do things like be a doctor or nurse or police officer they will have a stable job and a pay check! But as a writer your not working for someone and you need a side job :( I want my dreams to be my only job tho! Can I make my own business writing children stories?

writing them is one thing. Finding a company to publish them and actually making money is another. you can always self publish at a place like LuLu.com

You can certainly write whatever you want, and if you try enough and want it enough, you will probably get published. I did. You will need a side job at least for getting started, anyway. I have a regular job and write books on the side every couple of years. It’s hard, and don’t get discouraged when you get rejection. The more you put yourself out there, the more you stand to receive rejection. So that’s okay.

Here are some jobs (and I don’t know you, I realize! lol) that I think a writer would like to have to be able to continue to write in some capacity between books or as a day job.
    copywriter
    web content writer
    technical writer
freelance newspaper or online magazine writer
quality assurance editor for online mag or transcription
where these don’t sound terribly exciting, you can write at night and maybe one day, hit your stephen king jackpot and leave that day job.

i’m still waiting for that day myself! ;-) Good Luck!
