Are Borders Books and Music and Barnes and Noble going out of business?

business books
Snoopy asked:

And being replaced by independent bookstores? I just read about the annual Book Expo convention in LA. What’s the future for E-Books? And one of the publishing head-honchos wants to return to the old Good Old Days. What are the chances of that happening?

Borders is going out of business and right now Barnes and Noble and Wal-Mart are the two contenders for buying it over.

No I haven’t heard of Borders or Barnes and Noble going out of business. Borders is considering selling itself though.

As far as I am concerned the future of e-books is grim. Another e book publisher Chippewa Press recently went under. I think the future of books is the warehouse outlet store. Most authors these days are doing great business at Costco, Sam’s Club, BJ Warehouse at discounted prices. Odd Hours just came out at 27.00 in retail stores. In Costco, it was 14.95 with a 2.00 instant rebate. They make up the difference in volume. That is a huge savings. Whenever possible, I buy at Costco or BJ.

Another thing the future is going to bring for agented authors is higher cuts of our royalties. So many amateurs are sending in material that is not requested and not worth reading that agents are having to hire more staff to handle the rejection letters and mail. And just where is that extra money going to come from? The pockets of the authors they represent. It is sad to think that real authors are going to have to pay for all the junk that gets sent to a publisher or agent. But agents are going to have to increase their profits in order to cover expenses.

If by the Good Old Days, you mean the end of e publishing and the return of books, as far as I am concerned, books never left. I have turned down e publishing offers before. Just not worth it. Someone buys a copy, then they share it with their friends and the author gets nada. Not for me. Pax-C

none of the three major chains are closing (borders, b&n, and books a million) but all have posted grim sales for this year due to the poor economy and loss of sales to stores like amazon and costco. borders is not up for sale and will only be put up for sale if end of year sales cannot cover operational costs. if consumers continue to flock to costco and walmart like stores, then yes all bookstores will eventually close.

It’s the opposite. As Barnes & Noble moves into territories, the mom and pops are slowly going out of business.

Borders isn’t doing as well as B&N - but industry analysts believe this reason due to B&N’s attempt to be a community store with book clubs, school book fairs, and local events.

There are rumors that Borders may potentially be up for sale (see), but B&N continues to build in strength. In fact, the story goes that B&N is looking to BUY Borders (see the New York Post link below).

I personally prefer B&N or independent bookstores - they’re just more comfortable to shop in..

i really don’t think that borders and Barnes and noble are going out of business i haven’t heared anything about either chain filing for bankruptcy or anything along those lines on the news.

Apparently so if continues with their book library which has almost a million books.

Amazon.com is a affiliate with Borders books who also collaborates with Google as well. Borders still can close down but still be in business.

Barnes & Nobel are heavily considering staying with the online service but there is no say in their business closing down. But if they do, I wouldn’t be surprise.

Independent books stores are very high in the uprise. They are the new Ma and Pa establishments of the book industry.

Don’t be surprised that they already have online books and computerized books on purchase, which is a little computer tablet that you can hold in your backpack or purse.
iTunes is also getting into the picture and Apple.com has something in store for avid book readers by Christmas.

I don’t think that is bound to happen any time soon. What I do see happening is that the publishing industry is going to start putting pressure against Amazon (Amazon is beginning to reek imho), and brick and mortar operations like B&N and Borders will merge to be able to compete against places such as Costco and Walmart’s.

In terms of electronic publishing, only the strongest will remain, which is what has been happening anyway. Epublishers such as Ellora’s Cave and Samhain Publishing are going strong, and they have entered into deals with big print houses.

    No

Barnes & Noble did declare bankrupcy so you may want to use up your gift cards before they say they are going out of business.
